Banksfield Nursing Home Resident Joan Wilkinson Celebrates 100th Birthday and Shares Her Longevity Secret
We Care Group - 28 May 2024
Banksfield Nursing Home had a special celebration on Tuesday, May 21, as resident Joan Wilkinson marked her 100th birthday surrounded by loved ones and fellow residents. The centenarian, known for her vibrant spirit and fascinating life story, shared her secret to a long life: clean living.
Born in Fleetwood to James and Ada Boothman, Joan was one of five siblings. Her life took a remarkable turn during World War II when she worked for the railways and was given a driving license to operate lorries, bypassing the need for a driving test. In 1962, Joan relocated to Preston and settled in Fulwood, where she has lived ever since.
Joan’s personal life has been as eventful as her career. She married twice and is a proud mother of three children: two sons from her first marriage and a daughter from her second. Professionally, Joan managed retail shops for Plumbs, a well-known home furnishings company, until the stores closed. She then transitioned to a role as a home consultant, helping clients measure and fit furniture covers and curtains.
Her daughter Sarah attributes Joan’s longevity to her healthy lifestyle. “She has always enjoyed entertaining and had lots of friends,” Sarah shared. “She has outlived all her siblings and friends probably due to her healthy living—never smoked, had no head for alcohol, and was always the designated driver.”
Joan’s 100th birthday was a joyous occasion at Banksfield Nursing Home, owned by We Care Group, where the staff and residents celebrated with a buffet and heartfelt tributes. Joan’s story continues to inspire those around her, highlighting the importance of healthy habits and a positive outlook on life.
Happy Birthday, Joan!
