A Blossoming Transformation: Keith's Garden at Banksfield Care Home

At Banksfield Nursing Home in Preston, part of the We Care Group, the grounds are flourishing thanks to the green thumbs and determination of one remarkable resident. Keith Jellis, who came to Banksfield in dire straits, has found new purpose and joy in transforming the garden and outdoor spaces into thriving, beautiful sanctuaries.

When Keith first arrived at Banksfield two years ago, his prognosis was grim. He was extremely unwell, with deep, severe wounds on his legs and severe jaundice. The toll of heavy drinking had left him in a precarious state, and he was given just two weeks to live. However, the dedicated care and support from the Banksfield team, coupled with Keith’s own tenacity, have worked wonders.

Last year, Keith started with a small, raised bed to grow vegetables. His success led to an expansion this year, complete with a shed and greenhouse. He now tends to a vegetable patch, grows flowers, and has taken on the task of beautifying the beds at the front of the home. Keith’s vegetables are used in the home’s kitchen, providing fresh, pesticide-free produce for everyone to enjoy.

Keith’s day often begins at 5 am, and he spends hours tending to his garden, finding peace and fulfillment in his work. Despite his mobility challenges, he diligently cares for his plants, ensuring they thrive. His efforts have not only transformed the physical space but also his own mental health and wellbeing.

The garden now boasts a variety of vegetables and a beautiful remembrance garden, a place of reflection and peace for residents and visitors alike. Keith’s work with the hedges and flower beds has also enhanced the curb appeal of Banksfield, making it a welcoming place for all.

While Keith maintains some contact with his brother and son, they rarely visit. For Keith, the staff at Banksfield are his true family. He often says that without their support, he wouldn’t be here today. The structure and care provided by the staff have been pivotal in keeping him away from alcohol and giving him a safe, nurturing environment to thrive.

Keith reflects on his journey:

“When I first came to Banksfield, I wasn’t sure I’d make it. But the staff here, they’re like my family now. They believed in me and gave me the chance to do something meaningful. I love getting up early and working in the garden. It’s given me a new lease on life.”

Keith’s story is a testament to the transformative power of care, community, and a sense of purpose. Known as a rough diamond, Keith had lived a rugged life in Preston, working various jobs and struggling with alcoholism. His initial time at Banksfield was meant for end-of-life care, but Keith had other plans.

Ria Lilley, Banksfield Nursing Home Manager, shares:

“Keith’s journey is truly inspirational. When he came to us, he was in a very bad way. It’s incredible to see how far he’s come. The team has been amazing, but it’s Keith’s determination that has been the real driving force behind his recovery. We’re so proud of him and the beautiful garden he’s created.”

At Banksfield Nursing Home, Keith’s garden continues to grow, symbolising hope, recovery, and the endless possibilities that come with a supportive community. As Keith himself says, “I wouldn’t be here without Banksfield. This is the best home I’ve had, and I’m proud of what I’ve achieved.”

Keith’s remarkable turnaround and his beautiful garden are a testament to the power of care, purpose, and community. At Banksfield Nursing Home, life blooms anew, thanks to Keith’s dedication and the unwavering support of the team.
